Marienplatz
Marienplatz can be found in the heart of Munich and is surrounded by spectacular buildings, from old cathedrals to new government offices. The square acts as a landmark for locals and tourists alike, and there are a number of things to see and do whilst wandering around the local area. Not only are there signposted walkways to the old and new town halls, but you’ll also get the chance to see the fantastic Marian Column – a statue of the Virgin Mary made out of Gold.
Frauenkirche
This church, the largest in Munich, is one of the most famous landmarks in the city. Not only can it hold up to 20,000 worshipers, but it can be clearly recognized from miles around by its two huge twin towers that help to shape the Munich skyline. When there is no mass being held in the church, then the building is open to tours, and tourists can climb to the top of both towers to see amazing views of the city, as well as the Bavarian Alps.
Beer
One of the best things about Munich is its beer, and whether you’re visiting for Oktoberfest, you’re on a stag-do or you’re simply coming for a weekend break, there will be plenty of opportunities to sample the local ales. HofBrauhaus is the most famous beer house in the world, and it can be found in the heart of Munich. With great food served here as well as numerous beers, make sure to book a hotel near to the beer house districts, or at least get a taxi cab back to your room!
Dachau Concentration Camp
After the end of the Second World War, concentration camps were shut down in their thousands, and many were preserved to show future generations the harsh conditions and squalor that the Jewish people had to endure. Dachau Concentration Camp was one of the first to be opened in Germany, and it was used to train soldiers that would be sent off to other camps in the Third Reich. There are plenty of transport links to get here, however, as it is located around 10 miles outside the city, hiring a car is advisable.
